How to Learn English Vocabulary (Article 10)

This article will teach you the best way to learn vocabulary for the English language. It’s a little different from most of the other posts on this blog because this one will be written for English language learners. This means I’m focusing on how to learn vocabulary for native English speakers as well, but I’ll also focus on what makes learning vocabulary for English language learners so much easier.

STEP 1: Know What You Want to Learn

The first step to learning vocabulary is knowing what you want to learn. Think about the words you want to learn and how they will help you in your English studies. You’ll know that you’ve learned them when you can use them in real-world situations.

If you’re looking to learn new words to use with native English speakers, it’s important that you understand the context they are used in. When you use these words in a sentence, you’ll get the most out of them.

STEP 2: Read Lots of Books

This is a no brainer, but I’m going to say it anyway. Reading is the best way to learn new vocabulary. If you want to be able to use new words with native English speakers, you’ll need to read lots of books written for English language learners.

You can find plenty of books written for this purpose on Amazon or on sites like Goodreads.

STEP 3: Use Audio Courses and Podcasts

A lot of people think they don’t have time to read books because they are always busy doing something else. However, there are tons of audio courses and podcasts out there that will help you learn new vocabulary at your own pace.

My recommendation is to find some free audio courses on iTunes or on Google Play and start listening to them. Some great places to find these are Language Exchange and English Grammar Girl.

STEP 4: Watch Movies

Many of us would like to learn new vocabulary while we’re watching a movie. There’s a reason why movies are so popular. They give us a chance to learn new words without having to read or study anything.

You can use a site like IMDb to search for movies that have been translated into English, or you can use a site like Babel Fish to translate subtitles from foreign languages into English. You can also use an app like Subtitle Master to do the same thing.

STEP 5: Use Anki

Anki is an amazing way to learn vocabulary because it allows you to create flashcards with images, audio, and text. This makes it easy to review your vocabulary and make sure you’ve learned it correctly.

If you want to learn more about this amazing software, I suggest reading the Anki website. It has tons of information on the subject.

STEP 6: Study Vocabulary in Real-World Contexts

You don’t need to wait until you are in an English class to learn new vocabulary. You can also use books, articles, blogs, and online forums to learn new words.

STEP 7: Practice Makes Perfect

The last step to learning vocabulary is practice. The more you use your new vocabulary, the easier it will be for you to remember it. You can use sites like Duolingo or Memrise to help you learn new vocabulary.

You can also take a break from studying by taking some time to play games or read books.

Thanks for reading!
